It's not impossible, it's just hard

Having a clear understanding of what it takes is detrimental to every success. In the same way you enjoy knowing the distance a journey takes you so that you can prepare yourself mentally, that's the same knowing what it takes would help you get ready for all the other endeavors you get in.

Unfortunately, we can’t always determine this quite easily, I can’t tell you how much work you’ll need to put in to achieve your goals, it's not as easy as measuring the distance between two cities and calculating the time it will take to get there. Won’t it be wonderful if we could do that? For you to be able to determine the precise amount of work and effort required to achieve your goals, but unfortunately for us, this isn’t a linear process and varies based on a lot of factors.

For some, achieving a goal might just take the right calls being placed, while for others, achieving the same goals might require years of work and persistence, yet again for others that goal sounds like nothing worth achieving.

How can we measure the amount of work it will take to achieve a goal?

Finding the right information

The first thing you want to kind of break down are all the information you need. In the same way that you can easily determine the time it will take you to travel from one town to another by taking into account the distance between the cities, the speed of your vehicle, possible obstacles on the way etc. You can determine with great precision at exactly what time you’ll get there. In the same way, in order to achieve your goals, you need information about the following.

  • First you have your goal which should be clearly defined, for example lose 30kg in 6 months.
  • Then you can break it down even further
  • Evaluate the complexity of the problem by listing the tasks need to achieve this goal
  • Asses the resources you already have at hand; time, manpower, materials etc
  • Consider dependencies, which are basically elements which don’t depend on you
  • Risk factors
  • Utilize past experience which can prove very valuable in everything you do
  • Consult stakeholders, seek the input from team members, people with experience doing similar things.
  • Estimation techniques
  • Iterate and adjust

Making an estimation

As you can see, there are a lot of steps involved in determining how much effort is required for you to achieve your goals and based on how big they are, these efforts grow exponentially. When you are done gathering the information required, then you’ll be easily able to see whether it is worth your time and energy or it isn’t at the end of the day. The confidence trick is that for the things you are the most passionate about, they are the most likely to be worth your time
